Our region is rich in invaluable natural resources—from high-yield crop varieties and productive livestock to abundant freshwater—resources that are often taken for granted. At our institute, we recognize the immense value of these national assets and are committed to raising awareness within communities about their significance, while working collaboratively to ensure their sustainable use and preservation.
The core focus of our program is to build the capacities of local communities in critical areas such as agriculture (including fisheries), livestock management, forestry (including sericulture), and watershed management. By empowering people with the knowledge and skills to responsibly manage these resources, we aim to safeguard their long-term viability and contribute to the region’s sustainable development.
Since its inception, the Natural Resource Management Training Programme (NRMTP) has recognized the diverse needs of communities, from Mardan to Gwadar and Badin to Muzaffarabad. The program tailors its training to the specific resources and needs of these communities, ensuring relevance and impact. By promoting energy efficiency and the use of alternative energy sources, we work closely with farmers to foster sustainable agricultural practices and are continuously developing new training programs to minimize our environmental impact.
The Natural Resource Management Training Programme (NRMTP) focuses on optimizing the use of local resources and reducing dependency on external sources. Its goal is to strengthen local capacities for sustainable resource management through the prevention of resource loss, enhancement of productivity, and environmental rehabilitation.
At IRM, we believe it is essential to train a cadre of local activists in various NRM disciplines to foster a culture of effective and sustainable natural resource management at the grassroots level. Each year, a significant number of participants are trained through NRMTP, with training sessions ranging from one day to thirty days in duration. The institute has responded to the issues related to NRM through adopting a comprehensive strategy involving:
- Introduction and orientation to improved appropriate technologies;
- Imparting knowledge and expertise to enable them to benefit from new and appropriate technologies;
- Establishing strong and productive linkages for extending the outreach of government and other line departments at the local level;
- Training of master trainers to enable them to train other community members at the local level.
